15HP-Rotary 3 Phase Converter
Model R15/45
Maximum start under load is 15HP, but will power up to 45HP at one time.
Details
The H-A-S Rotary is designed to produce a three phase power output that will operate both motor and non-motor three phase loads from a single phase power supply. The standard model allows the three phase motors connected to obtain "soft-start" characteristics requiring only appoximately 66% of the inrush single phase line current compared to an equivalent HP single phase motor started on the same lines. This inrush (locked rotor current) from the line is approximately the same as if the three phase motor were started on three phase power. The H-A-S Rotary is designed to duplicate three phase power characteristics as closely as possible and maintain reasonable voltage balance with varyin loads applied. The H-A-S Rotary accomplishes this due to the rotating transformer construction and appropriate selection of capacitance values. The standard unit includes the capacitor bank securely mounted on the same bas with the gerator motor. This provides ease of installation and minimum wiring connections in the field. The H-A-S Rotary is rated with a dual horsepower classification. The first set of digits in the catalog number indicates the largest HP motor to be started while the second set indicates the maximum HP load that may be connected to the H-A-S Rotary. Minimum operating load is 25% of the largest HP motor rating of the converter.
LOCATION OF INSTALLATION
The H-A-S Rotary may be mounted or installed at most any location where it is readily accessible for maintenance. The open dripproof design of the H-A-S Rotary is for use in a dry, clean location with access to an adequate supply of cooling air. For an outdoor installation, the standard unit should be protected with a cover that does not block air flow to the H-A-S Rotary unit. Special units may come fully weatherproof. The H-A-S Rotary should be securely mounted or bolted to a strong flat surface in order to minimize noise and vibration.
STEELMAN ROTARY PHASE CONVERSION SYSTEMS
All Rotary Phase Conversion Systems have common components: (1) a three phase motor winding that acts as a generator to produce a three phase output from a single phase power source, and (2) a run capacitor section that provides for a more stable current and voltage condition when loads are applied. Some Rotary Phase Converters also have what is known as a "start circuit" which consists of start capacitors, a contactor, and a control relay. The "start circuit" is the most critical link in these Rotary Phase Converters, since if one of these components should fail, the "generator motor" will not get up to speed, resulting in damage to the generator winding and single phasing
the load connections. Steelman Industries has taken this weak link out of the Rotary Phase Converter, by having Baldor Electric Company of Fort Smith, Arkansas, design a three phase "generator motor" that will start on single phase power without the necessity of a "start circuit". Other Rotary Phase Converter manufacturers use foreign brand motors and cut the shafts of the motors and add the "start circuit", thus modifying the motor to do something it was not designed to do, and requiring you to return the unit to the factory for repair.
Warranty on Steelman's Baldor "generator" motor is covered by any of the several thousand Baldor warranty stations across the nation. If you should have a problem with your Steelman Rotary "generator motor", Steelman can get you in contact with a local electric motor repair shop, which will be able to assist you promptly.
Steelman utilizes top grade capacitors purchased directly from the capacitor manufacturer, while other competitors buy surplus capacitors that result in inconsistent inventory and quality. Steelman uses 480 Volt rated capacitors in its 240 Volt Rotary Phase Converters and 660 Volt rated capacitors in its 480 Volt Rotary Phase Converters. The voltage across the capacitors in Rotary Phase Converters will run 20 to 40 volts higher than the incoming voltage under no-load conditions. This higher voltage produces extra stress on capacitors that are rated for the incoming voltage. Using higher voltage capacitors greatly increases the life expectancy of these components and also results in a reduction of thermal losses making the Steelman Rotary Phase Converter more efficient and stronger in performance than other brands.
Unlike other competitors, Steelman manufactures its own enclosures and motor bases. Steelman's Rotary Phase Converter is built on a steel base, while other competitors require you to mount the generator motor. Steelman's Rotary Phase Converter has simple connections and simple Installation instructions for a successful operation. It comes with a 2 pole terminal block labeled for Single Phase input and a 3 pole terminal block labeled.
